Synopsis: Crown Molding Block

Crown Block

Crown molding is a nice and relatively inexpensive way to enhance the look of virtually any room in your home. That nice white or stained band of trim separating the walls from the ceiling is the added touch that in some cases will mean a sale for your home or not. But even if you are not selling your home I think there is a satisfaction that comes from having a nicely decorated home and a crown molding is a good start toward that goal.

If your looking for a little more than crown molding consider a crown block in the inside and outside corners. They are really easy to make. An inside crown block (used on an inside corner) can be made in five pieces. See Below. If your looking for something really special consider our crown blocks from White River Products. They are available in two sizes.

  1. The CRV5095 hand carved in Lindenwood will accommodate crown molding form 5 1/2" - 7" wide.
  2. The smaller CRV5099 will accept crown molding up to 5" wide.

But even if you are making your own, the process in quite simple. The three piece block made of 1X's is made to accommodate the size of your crown molding. The same crown used in the room can be used to make the detail below the crown block. This is a good application for a brad air nailer and carpenters glue.

The outside corner is often not used because of the size need to accommodate the crown molding. Many find it to be obtrusively large. Below I have sketched one to show the difference in size between the inside corner block.

Here you really get an idea of the size required to make an outside corner block. Remember there are no "design police" out there to arrest you if you leave it out. I've left out many an outside corner block and I haven't been arrested yet but I have gotten a lot of "Atta boys" for the inside crown block.

Below is the same crown on an outside corner without the outside corner block. Good luck and watch out for the design police.
