Interior Design: Investing in Quality and Durable Furniture
Remember your first apartment filled with hand me down furniture that was mismatched and well loved? That was a really fun time but at some point we grow up, get married, have children and real life begins!
Purchasing furniture and home accessories from low cost retailers such as Ikea are fine when you are on your own or raising a young family and looking for functional pieces that are inexpensive and can be tossed after a few years of use. These options should not be discounted in terms of their role in a busy family household.
However, when you are ready to pay serious attention to the interior design of your home, it is time to think beyond the price tag and look for pieces that are quality made, will last for decades and that you can pass down to your children many years from now.
Buy what you love: First and foremost, choose pieces that you fall in love with at first sight. These are the pieces, no matter the cost, that will bring you years of pleasure and functional enjoyment. When you fill your home with pieces that you hand picked and adore, your house will be that much homier. These are the elements that will give your home its distinct style, character and mood.
Stay clear of particleboard: When you are looking at quality pieces of furniture whether it is a bedroom set, a foyer table, dining room chairs or a coffee table, seek out solid wood pieces that are made from quality woods such as oak, cherry, mahogany or maple. Look inside and underneath the item before purchasing it. If you are paying top dollar and you want it to last, make sure there are no undersides that are made of particleboard or pressboard. You want 100% solid wood. Seek out master wood craftsmen that create custom furniture according to your specifications. Owning a piece that is one of a kind is always gratifying.
Stay clear of trends: Every year, new trends in furniture come and go. These are amazing to accent or accessorize your home and to change the look and feel of a room every few years. However, in most cases, you will grow tired quickly of trendy home décor items and want to replace them. As such, it makes no sense to spend a fortune on a piece of furniture that you won’t have longer than two or three years. For your investment pieces, spend the most money on the traditional items in your home that you use on a regular basis and that serve a long term function in your home. Investment pieces may include a dining room suite, hall tree, 4-poster bed, and master suite dressers to name just a few.
There is always room in our everyday lives and homes for bright fabrics, fun materials and funky finds. As long as they are affordable, have fun with them!
When you are choosing heirloom quality pieces of furniture and accessories for your home’s interior design, always choose carefully and select quality. High end materials and expert craftsmanship will never let you down and is always worth the investment.
